What to look for in a District 2 preschool

District 2 has the highest concentration of international and bilingual preschools in Ho Chi Minh City, largely because of the expat population in Thao Dien and An Phu. That also means the widest spread in price, curriculum and class size — a few things worth comparing before you commit to a school visit:

• Curriculum. Montessori and Reggio Emilia are common in this area and both favour child-led, play-based learning over a fixed academic track. If you know you’ll want an international school place later, ask how the preschool’s approach feeds into primary admissions.
• Language mix. Some schools are fully English-medium, others are genuinely bilingual (English/Vietnamese) with real Vietnamese-language instruction time, not just a token class. Ask for the actual weekly split.
• Class ratios and age bands. Toddler rooms (18 months–3 years) should have noticeably lower child-to-teacher ratios than preschool rooms (3–5 years) — ask for the number, not just “small classes.”
• Commute in practice. Thao Dien and An Phu traffic gets heavy 7:30–8:30am. If you’re commuting from District 1 or Binh Thanh, visit at drop-off time before deciding, not just for a daytime tour.

Questions worth asking on a visit

Beyond the brochure: what’s the teacher turnover been like this year, how do they handle a child who doesn’t speak English yet, what’s the actual daily schedule (not just the marketing one), and what happens if your child gets sick during the day. The answers tell you more than the facilities tour does.
