Short version: a preschool covers the early years before formal schooling starts. An international school is a full K-12 (or similar) school delivering a foreign curriculum, which may or may not include its own early years section. Many families in Ho Chi Minh City start at a standalone preschool, then move to an international school once their child reaches primary age — but it doesn’t have to work that way.
Age range and purpose
Preschool typically covers roughly 18 months to 5–6 years old, focused on early development, social skills, and school-readiness rather than an academic curriculum. International school usually spans from early years (sometimes from age 2–3) all the way through primary and secondary, following a recognised foreign curriculum toward internationally recognised qualifications.
Curriculum and accreditation
Preschools generally follow a pedagogical approach — Montessori, Reggio Emilia, play-based — rather than a formal academic syllabus. International schools follow a defined curriculum (British/IGCSE, American, IB, Australian, and others are all present in Ho Chi Minh City) and are usually accredited by external bodies. If accreditation matters to your plans — say, you expect to move countries again and need transferable school records — check specifically for it; not every school calling itself “international” holds formal accreditation.
Cost
Standalone preschools generally cost less than the early years section of a full international school, partly because international schools price in the infrastructure (secondary labs, sports facilities, IB coordinators) that a dedicated preschool doesn’t need to maintain. If you’re optimising for budget in the early years, a strong standalone preschool is often better value than enrolling early into a K-12 international school purely for continuity.
When families typically switch
The most common pattern in Ho Chi Minh City is: standalone preschool through age 5–6, then a transition assessment and enrolment into an international school for primary (Grade 1 / Year 1). Some international schools give enrolment priority or an easier transition to children who attended their own early years section, so if you already know which international school you want long-term, ask early whether starting in their preschool section actually helps your child’s primary admission — at some schools it does, at others it makes no difference.
