What to check before signing up

Children’s classes in this part of the city vary far more than the websites suggest — in how long a term runs, in whether a class is taught in English, and in what happens when your child misses a week. A few things worth settling before you pay for a term:

• Ask for a trial class. Most studios here will give you one, and a single session tells you more about whether your child clicks with the teacher than any amount of reading will. If a provider won’t offer one, that is itself worth knowing.
• Term length and what happens if you miss a class. Some studios sell a fixed term with no make-ups, others run a credit system, others let you drop in. This is the single biggest difference between providers and it is rarely on the website.
• Language in the room, not on the brochure. A class advertised in English may be taught by a Vietnamese-speaking coach with an English-speaking assistant, or the reverse. Ask who is actually giving the instructions.
• Age bands and group size. A class spanning four to nine year olds will be pitched at the middle. Ask how many children are in the group and how the ages actually split on the day your child would attend.
• Where the class really happens. Several providers teach at partner venues rather than the address on their site, and a few run sessions across more than one location. Confirm the room before you plan the commute.
